Moving Pictures: The power of images to boost learner creativity and motivation - Merve Elbirlik and Emine Bülür Civanoğlu
This workshop offers a refreshing approach to using images in the classroom and the positive effects they can have on learner curiosity and motivation. Through a variety of activities the workshop shows how the use of images can move and motivate learners and enhance their overall learning experience.
This workshop will begin with a brief info about our teaching context and how images have helped us so far. Then it will continue with practical ideas and activities that participants can use at various levels with various age groups. The first activity will involve showing participants four doors with different colours and styles and asking participants – if you were running away from someone or something which one would you choose and why? Participants will be asked to share their answers with the group. The second activity will look at using book covers in which we are going to use Tony Humphrey’s book ‘Whose life are you living?’ We will share and exchange ideas on how we can use book covers. The next activity will introduce Picasa and MS Word as classroom resources; participants will attempt to guess the digital images which have been distorted and blurred and will be asked to put the split images into the correct order. The final activity will be ‘draw your sentence’. Participants will be practicing the target grammatical structures by drawing the sentences in a competitive race-type activity.
